What category buyers actually look for in a packaging pitch

Notes from 40+ buyer reviews across grocery, mass, and club. The objections rarely come from where founders expect.

Founders prepare for aesthetic critique. Buyers prepare for operational risk. Their questions cluster around shelf blocking, margin story, supply continuity, and whether this pack will create callouts in their next category review.

The buyer is not buying design. They are buying confidence that your pack will not create work for their team. Show variant logic, case pack dimensions, and how the line reads next to the category leader. Bring a one-page sell sheet with the numbers, not just the mood.

The packs that win meetings look inevitable on the shelf set you are pitching into. Mock the actual planogram. Name the competitor you are displacing. That specificity is what turns a maybe next reset into a slot conversation.
