Cost engineering is not about finding the cheapest substrate. It is about knowing which production choices shoppers actually perceive. Soft-touch laminate feels premium. So does emboss depth, within limits. Some finishes are invisible at shelf distance and expensive at scale.
We run paired comparisons: same structure, different finishing stacks, scored blind by category shoppers. The output is a perceived-quality index tied to CPU. That lets finance and design argue with data instead of taste.
The wins are often structural: right-size flutes, fewer ink stations, consolidated SKUs. The pack still feels premium because the hierarchy and color system do the work, not the varnish bill.
